Metals Bioaccumulation in Waterfowl

Mercury Loading in Nevada Wood Ducks

Morgan contributed to Dr. Chris Nicolai's 18-year project to monitor an isolated population of wood ducks in western Nevada. She collected live, breast tissue, and feather samples from 100 hunter-killed birds and found mercury levels as high as 40,000 ppb. She was able to model and correlate these results so that feathers could be used to determine the levels of contaminants in tissue. Thus, developing a less intrusive monitoring technique. Her work was presented in the summer 2023 issue of Delta Waterfowl magazine.
